Online-Workshop: How to tackle Global Inequalities? Debating two Approaches: Microfinance by Oikocredit and Fair Trade

Ort: Online-Veranstaltung

The global inequality regarding economic and social disparities has various reasons; among them historical ones such as wars and colonialism on the one hand and unequal conditions within our trade, tax and finance systems on the other hand. The lack of access to social securitys, health care and education exacerbates the situation of millions of people worldwide.

The consequences of Covid-19 continue to increase inequality: during the pandemic, poor people became poorer whereas the number of billionaires rose considerably.

SDG 10 addresses inequality as a major challenge: “Reducing inequalities and ensuring no one is left behind are integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Inequality within and among countries is a persistent cause for concern.” In our workshop, we want to discuss two well-established approaches to tackle the problem of unequal financial and economic conditions: the concept of microfinance by Oikocredit and the Fairtrade system.

Guiding Questions: What are their respective contributions to fighting global inequality? How to they complement each other? In which ways can Fairtrade and Oikocredit contribute to empowering people and trade partners all over the world? Which limits and obstacles do they face? Which critical perspectives need to be discussed? Which innovative and so far, little known approaches need to be considered)
